Nobody buys a deck for the framing. That is exactly why it gets shortchanged. A contractor working to hit a number has one obvious place to find it, and it is not the part the customer inspects. The Failures Nobody Sees Coming
Deck collapses almost never start at the boards. They start at a connection. The ledger board pulls away from the house, a post loses its footing, or a joist hanger corrodes through and lets go. The surface looks fine right up until the moment it does not, which is what makes structural shortcuts genuinely dangerous rather than just disappointing. A deck holding a family and a grill is carrying real live load, and that load runs down through the joists to the beams, into the posts, and out to the footings. Every one of those handoffs has to be right. Deck framing done correctly is invisible for twenty years. Done wrong, it stays invisible until the day it is not.
The Ledger Is the Most Common Weak Point
Where the deck attaches to the house is the single most failure-prone connection on the whole structure. Nailing a ledger to the rim joist and calling it done is still common, and it is not adequate. That connection needs through-bolts or structural screws in a specified pattern, not nails, and it needs flashing that sends water out and away rather than behind the board. Water that gets behind an unflashed ledger rots the rim joist of the house itself, and that repair costs several times what the deck did. It also removes the very thing the ledger is bolted to, which is how a deck ends up in the yard. Proper deck framing treats that connection as the most important part of the job, because it is.
North Texas Clay Moves, and the Structure Has to Account for It
This area sits on clay, which expands. It swells when the rain finally comes and shrinks hard through a Fort Worth summer, and that cycle moves everything built on it. Foundations shift, and so do deck footings that were not sized and placed for the condition. A post that rises an inch and settles back racks the frame out of square, opens gaps at the connections, and puts load where the design never intended it. Footings have to be sized for the soil and the load they carry, and the structure has to be designed knowing the ground underneath is not static. Generic deck advice misses this entirely, since footing guidance written for stable soil does not survive contact with Tarrant County clay.
Heat, UV, and What the Frame Does All Summer
Texas summers work on the structure as hard as they work on the surface. Repeated heat cycling expands and contracts materials, fasteners loosen over years of movement, and moisture swings between drought and downpour keep untreated wood working. Deck framing here has to be built with materials rated for the exposure and fasteners rated for the lumber they are driven into, since the wrong fastener in treated wood corrodes from the inside and gives up quietly. Joist spacing gets set for the span and the decking product, not by habit, because composite boards have different span requirements than wood and a frame built to the wrong spacing telegraphs every soft spot underfoot. None of this costs much at build time. All of it costs a great deal to fix later.
Wood, Steel, and What Each One Buys You

Get the structure in writing. Ask what the joist spacing is and why that number. Ask how the ledger attaches and how it is flashed. Ask what the footings are sized for.
